So Business Week recently posted an article about Hulu’s greatest hits. Apparently Hulu’s been around for a year already, that means a whole year of watching our television on the web. What kind of benefit does this give mainstream television shows like The Office, House, The Mentalist, etc?
Well Apparently not much because ranking #1 in most emailed and most embeded videos is Joss Whedon’s Internet show Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog! Now if you’re a nerd you’re already familiar with Joss Whedon, but if you’re not you probably are and just don’t realize it. Whedon is the creator, writer, director, and in some instances producer of such shows & films as Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Serenity, Doll House, and of course Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. Now if you haven’t seen Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. You need to. It’s brilliant. But it’s the kind of birlliance that modern television networks just don’t understand. Had Dr. Horrible just been created as a Pilot for one of the Illustrious studios, no doubt it would have been rejected across the board, and be exiled to the place where amazing television show pilots go when no one wants them, it would be probably be dropped on top of Conan O’Brien’s brilliant Lookwell Pilot that’s been buried in obscurity now.
But since Whedon is such a visionary he chose to take Dr. Horrible to the people, or so it would seem, and take the internet with it! So what’s the point of all of this? There seems to be an alternative to Modern Television, and the way that things are getting done. If more people took the Whedon approach and made their stuff available like he did, they could directly push what they’re making to the people who make it. One of the biggest mistakes networks seem to make is moving the schedule of their shows around so much that people can’t watch them because they don’t know when they’re on. With the internet there’s no problem with that. Hopefully we’ll start to see a change as more people start cutting their cable lines and relying on the internet for their media.
